Coming Full Circle

Artist Bio

I was born in 1951 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. During my childhood, family, friends, dance and music (piano) played an essential role in my development. As a young woman I studied Occupational Therapy in Amsterdam, and I have continued my professional practice in this field until full retirement in 2020.

I came to the USA as an adult (1981) and have permanently settled in the Triangle Area of North Carolina. While balancing the demands of family (1 son, 2 daughters) and work I found quilting, which has gradually evolved into my artistic passion. Natural fibers such as cotton or silk are some of my favorite materials to use when creating quilts of different sizes. They can be snuggled under on the bed, but also can serve to decorate the wall.

In my work I search to translate eternal images into textile art - universal themes
not bound to a certain place or time. Although I prefer working with simple geometric shapes such as squares, circles or diamonds, the light incorporated in my work creates a sense of depth and dimension beyond what form can provide. When I'm working on a piece I am totally focused on the experience, which takes me to a place beyond the mechanics of piecing fabric.

Artist Statement

It was Spring 2001 when a few members of DOQ (Durham/ Orange County Quilters) each lent a quilt to the Earl Wyn Theater in Carrboro to help improve the acoustics. My contribution was an all yellow quilt named “Solar Plexus”. It was a monochromatic, relatively simple design. It is a good example of how altering values and manipulating their placement can add incredible depth and interest in even a simple design. A few weeks later I received I call from a couple who had seen the quilt during a performance in the theater and were interested in purchasing it. That’s how I became an artist overnight!
Now, almost 25 years later, I realize I’m back to where I started with my show at Muse Gallery, which is right across the street from The Art Center. I truly have come full circle.

Most of my work (except the few Appliqué pieces) are geometric and straight lined.
Lately I’ve discovered the CIRCLE - a shape with no beginning and no end, holds profound symbolic meaning across cultures and contexts. It often represents unity, wholeness, infinity, and cycles of life, signifying completeness, perfection, and the interconnectedness of all things.
These Medallions are all circular. By using different fabric designers, they all have a different “Mood”.
