EMBRACING THE FLOW

Chea

Fluid art is a medium that facilitates a variety of sensations and feelings as long as one does not just “go with the flow”, but is willing and ready to guide and steer the flow to reflect your inspiration and mood. Whereas the artist may have a specific impression she wants to evoke, the viewer can easily provide their own interpretation.

Artist Biography: Chea started experimenting with Fluid Art at the height of the Covid Pandemic. She was first introduced to it by her mentor Frinee Rodriguez, a talented Dominican artist she connected with online. The medium resonated with her immediately. She started experimenting with resin, vases, coasters, trays, angels and more, but she felt the need for greater knowledge of the medium and searched for tutorials on YouTube. There, she found three amazing artists online (Molly Leach, Rinske Dounna and Olga Soby), and registered for one of Molly’s online courses that taught the fundamental techniques, such as how to mix and use distinct color combinations to achieve a higher form of abstract expression. After this experience, she continued to learn Acrylic Pouring techniques.

The works you see today are imprints of her life and feelings at the time of making them, brought to life by her constant experiments with new techniques and ideas. Her work has been displayed as part of collective exhibitions in Miami, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, and has been shown through Artboxy in Spain, Italy, Germany, Dubai, and Switzerland. She was featured artist in the poetry section of the Spring 2025 edition of Persimmon Tree magazine for creative women over 60.

Born in a small coastal village in the southwest of the Dominican Republic, through her own initiative, she moved through a series of careers as she earned her PhD in clinical psychology: elementary school teacher, social worker, clinical psychologist and sex educator. She has lived and/or worked in Central and South America as well as the United States. Chea has resided in Carrboro North Carolina since 2006 with her husband of 31 years and has two grown children.

Artist Statement: Why my love affair with Fluid Art? Firstly, the process of experimenting with new techniques, mixing colors, and preparing my canvases brings me great joy and relaxation. I find it immensely therapeutic. Secondly, in Fluid Art the possibilities are limitless. You can use the same medium, the same paint colors, the same technique, and every time you will get different results; therefore, every piece is unique. What I like most about fluid art are the colors, forms and designs you create as you manipulate the paint on the canvas. What differentiates fluid art from other traditional art is that when you paint with a brush, once the brush stroke is applied to the canvas it remains there. However. once fluid paint is applied to the canvas and you attain the desired result, the painting and colors keep interacting during the curing process. Pouring medium has its own moods and mind that you must interact with during and after the creation process, so embrace the flow.
