In this class you'll create a coptic journal with a creative interior that you'll be excited to use later on. We'll prepare the cover boards, folded signatures of a variety of pages, foldouts and pockets, and learn the 1-needle coptic stitch–a binding method that allows the book to lay flat and highlights the exposed stitching. Come enjoy the joy of crafting your own creative coptic journal from scratch!

Note: This class leans towards an intermediate level, so some basic experience with binding, hand crafts, or stitching is helpful. Please inquire if you have any concerns or questions.

Supplies & Materials
The majority of the supplies will be provided, though participants are asked to bring some tools and some "found" paper as part of the creative interior. There will be some tools such as craft knives, bone folders, and awls to share as well as a few cutting mats, but please bring what you can from the list.

Students should bring:
An assortment of 5-10 sheets of their own paper sized to 10.5 x 7.25 inches (if you'd like to be exact). It's also ok if some paper is a little smaller or larger–this can be a creative decision to incorporate and alter in class, but note there will be limited time on this aspect. Suggested papers include maps, magazine/catalog pages, gift wrap, book pages, interesting printed or handmade paper, but basics or solid color paper works as well. Avoid really thin papers.

Tools and other items:
  • bone folder
  • self-healing cutting mat (12 x 18 size is good)
  • (A scrap piece of matte board or heavy cardboard--like a paper pad backing-- that you don't mind cutting on works too!)
  • 12" or 18" ruler
  • awl
  • craft knife like xacto or olfa (and an extra blade or two)
  • scissors
  • pencil and eraser
  • 2 washcloths or small towels/rags (ones you don't care about) for keeping hands clean and dry
