Play is an instinct many animals are born with, and humans are no exception! As we grow older, though, many of us are taught—implicitly and explicitly—that our survival depends on distancing ourselves from these instincts in order to be serious and logical. We tighten up, retreat into our heads, and narrow ourselves to only playing in certain company, under certain influences, at certain times, and for certain gains. Worse—some of us buy into the myth that play is a luxury that only other people can afford! But play—like creativity, beauty, or expression—is a human right. It makes life worth living. It makes our work, our creation, our relationships, and our growth possible.

Join chaplain and theatre artist Sarah Donnell for a 3-part workshop to reclaim and kickstart your own playfulness in this phase of your adult life. Start by unpacking and addressing barriers to play; then learn about tools for instigating play; experiment with your personal preferred sense of play; and come away with practices to bring more playfulness into your own life. Participants can expect to be guided through discussions, individual reflection, theatre games, and creative exercises in a cohesive experience that will be thoughtful, accessible, and fun.

About the Artist:

Sarah Donnell is a theatre artist, presence and creativity coach, yoga teacher, and interfaith chaplain. She brings groups—large and small—through transitions and into greater awareness by helping them tap into a spirit of authenticity, playful experimentation, and creativity. Whether in a corporate training, an acting studio, at a wedding ceremony, or at the bedside of the dying, Sarah knows how to listen and respond to what’s happening beneath the words being spoken. She spent years performing in and putting on plays in New York City before running a theatre-for-social-change troupe at UNC Chapel Hill. She has most recently been teaching acting classes at the Carrboro ArtsCenter, the Durham Arts Council, and Atlanta’s Tony-award-winning Alliance Theatre. As an educator, Sarah creates spaces in which the dignity, vulnerability, and goofiness of each student can be in the mix. More at wellplayedcreative.com
