About the Artist
Marga de Bruijn -van den Honert was born in 1951 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. During her childhood family, friends, dance and music (piano) played an essential role in her development.
As a young woman, she studied Occupational Therapy in Amsterdam and has continued her professional practice in this field until full retirement in 2020. She came to the USA as an adult (1981) and has permanently settled in the Triangle Area of North Carolina.
While balancing the demands of family (1 son, 2 daughters) and work she found quilting, which has gradually evolved into her artistic passion. Natural fibers such as cotton or silk are some of her favorite materials to use when creating quilts of different sizes. They can be snuggled under on the bed, but also can serve to decorate the wall.
In her work she searches to translate eternal images into textile art - universal themes not bound to a certain place or time. Although she prefers working with simple geometric shapes such as squares, circles or diamonds, the light incorporated in her work creates a sense of depth and dimension beyond what form can provide.
Most of Marga's work (except the few Appliqué pieces) are geometric and straight lined. Lately she's discovered the CIRCLE - a shape with no beginning and no end, holds profound symbolic meaning across cultures and contexts. It often represents unity, wholeness, infinity, and cycles of life, signifying completeness, perfection, and the interconnectedness of all things. These Medallions are all circular. By using different fabric designers, the all have a different “Mood.”
When she is working on a piece she is totally focused on the experience, which takes her to a place beyond the mechanics of piecing fabric.
