Do you have a meditation practice that you would like to extend to other areas of your life? Do you enjoy sewing, especially hand sewing, and have a pile of mending that needs attention? This class offers the opportunity for students to bring the practice of mindful meditation and hand sewing together in a relaxed group setting. If you would like to extend your spiritual practice further into your creative expression this group is for you.
We will begin each group with a reading of a phrase of poetry and 10-minute meditation focused on settling into the present using the breath and the body. Then, for the duration of our time we will sew together as a group doing any type of hand sewing you prefer - clothing mending or embroidery, or whatever you like. Pre-registration is required. Please bring hand sewing supplies and a few pieces of clothing to mend or embroider on.
About the instructor

Rachel Moon is a Carrboro artist who is a sewing teacher at the ArtsCenter working in both the youth and adult programs teaching sewing and upcycled art. She is a multi-disciplinary artist who has created in many mediums including mixed media, photography, collage, and found object art.
She started her journey with meditation more than 20 years ago when introduced to it in a yoga class. Rachel has led meditations with the meditation community Open Sky in Carrboro and has a daily practice of meditation and yoga she’s been keeping since 2017. She loves to introduce others to the space and vibrancy that can be found in connecting with the breath and the body in stillness.
Rachel has been a professional alterationist and sewist for over 15 years. She became a sewist and alterationist because fashion had always been a passion for her, and she was especially motivated by her passion for environmentalism and reducing landfill waste.
