We are honored to present the sensational work of Sudie Rakusin in her upcoming show, Layers of Color / Moments in Time. We invite you to immerse yourself in her world of color and characters, depicted through multi-media works. Figurative paintings, collages, and functional art will be on display from May 1st until June 30th. 

Join us for her reception on Sunday, May 3rd from 5-7pm, where you will have the chance to meet the artist, experience the work firsthand, and share in an evening of art, community, and conversation. Live piano music and refreshments will be present.

PAINTING — Sudie Rakusin ~ Fine Art

"Putting together this show, I realized that there are pieces from eight different series created over several years: Grids, Altars, large figurative pieces, papier mache bowls, garden tables, collage numbers, Numerology, and Secret Language in Nature. 

I get inspired by moving through my days carefully, observing and taking note of what transpires. 

Each of these series has an origin story that began as a kernel of an idea. Everything starts in my sketchbook. My sketchbooks hold quotes from books that inspire me, poems that move me, quick drawings of ideas for pieces as well as longer, more realized drawings when ideas become concrete. Series emerge from those more concrete ideas. I stay with an idea or topic until I’ve exhausted all possibilities before I move on. 

This show is a compilation of many of these ideas come to fruition; layers of color and moments in time."

BIO

I am a visual artist, sculptor, author, illustrator and publisher.  I was born and raised in Washington, DC, and I currently reside in Hillsborough, NC.  I received my BFA in painting from Boston University and my MFA in Painting from the University of Arizona.  

ARTIST STATEMENT

Being an animal activist and feminist, my artwork flows from what moves me and from where I find beauty: women, animals, the earth, color, pattern and light. My art represents the deep connection I feel with these elements. Through my artwork I create a world as I would like it to be, where harmony exists between animal and human, and where nature thrives. My work includes pen and ink drawings, papier-mâché sculptures and vessels, collage, abstract and figurative paintings in cold wax and oil, and 3-dimensional oil on canvas paintings featuring women and animals. “Art is where I go for refuge, replenishing, and how I pay homage to what sustains me.”
