Moons over the Ruined Castle

Made at NC Quilt Symposium 2009 during the workshop “Instant Art Quilts” by Ellen Lindner. We tore fabrics in specific (eyeballed) increments only to recompose a background following some basic rules about values, while very much at random at the same time. Being used to stitching precise seams, this “raw edge” approach was challenging for me!
Yet to this day I feel good about trying a raw edge method.
The fabric I used for this piece was commercial. For the embroidery I used Laura Wasilowsky’s hand-dyed thread to add texture to the piece.
At the time my youngest daughter Donna was learning to play the flute.
She followed the Suzuki Method. One of our favorite pieces to perform together (flute&piano) was “Moon over the Ruined Castle”…
